Carbon Trust hopes that the label will eventually serve as a universal indicator of the amount of carbon emitted in the manufacture, packaging and transport of a product.
The label will appear first on products from Walkers Crisps, Boots Organic shampoo, and Innocent smoothies. Companies have to commit to reducing their carbon footprint over a two-year period or risk having the label withdrawn.
Research undertaken by Carbon Trust shows that 66 percent of consumers say they want to know the carbon footprint of the products they buy, The Independent reports.
A number of other carbon label programs are in the works from various organizations.
